Do not use your personal car for a week
Why should you do this?
The transport sector stands out as the fastest-growing consumer of power and a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This concerning trend necessitates immediate and decisive action to address the environmental impact associated with the sector's rapid growth. The combustion of one gallon (3.8L) of gasoline produces approximately 20 pounds (9kg) of carbon dioxide emissions. This translates to an average vehicle generating around 6 to 9 tons of CO2 annually (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, 2023). In 2018, public transportation, with its wide-ranging effects on land use, was estimated to have a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 37 million metric tons annually (American Public Transport Association, 2008). Carpooling also reduces CO2 emissions as less vehicles are on the road.
What is the goal and how to achieve it?
The goal for this week is to leave your car in the parking lot. If you live in a city, use a bicycle or public transportation to get by. Familiarize yourself with the public transportation services available in your area. Identify the routes, schedules, and fares that suit your commuting needs. If you live in a rural area, try carpooling with your neighbors. This is also a great occasion to get to know them. This action might be more challenging than some others, but it also has a greater impact.
Side bonus:
This will save you some money. Also, while not driving, you can relax during your commute by reading a book, listening to music, or catching up on work.
