Avoid food waste

Why should you do this?
Food waste has substantial environmental, social, and economic implications. It adds to greenhouse gases, strains natural resources, and exacerbates food insecurity. About one-third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted around the world (World Food Programme, 2020). Food waste decomposes in landfills, releasing potent greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change (US Department of Agriculture, 2022). Along with that, wasted food signifies a loss of valuable resources like energy, water, and labor (United Nations, 2023). By reducing food waste, we can minimize our ecological footprint, conserve resources, and address hunger and food inequity.

What is the goal and how to achieve it?
The goal for this week is to avoid food waste in your daily life. Plan your meals for the week and create a detailed shopping list. Serve and consume appropriate portions to avoid leftovers or plate waste. Start with smaller portions and take more if needed to prevent food from going uneaten. Be creative with leftovers and incorporate them into new meals. If portions at a restaurant are too big for you, offer them to other people who share your table or ask for a doggy bag.

Side bonus:
By minimizing food waste, you save money by avoiding unnecessary purchases and utilizing ingredients effectively. It inspires you to try new recipes, meal combinations, and experiment with flavors.
